Rohit Sharma Joins The Elite List;  Indian Legends To Have A Stand After Them At The Wankhede

On Friday, May 16, it marked a special moment in time for cricket fans as India skipper Rohit Sharma was felicitated by the MCA for a glorious Indian career. Notably, a stand named after the hitman was inaugurated at the Wankhede Stadium in presence of great dignitaries including Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis. 

Notably, Rohit, who was one denied an entry into the Wankhede Stadium, now has a stand named after him. MCA, in their annual general meeting in April, passed a resolution to rename Vithal Divecha Level 3 stand after Rohit Sharma, who recently bid adieu to Test cricket. Talking about Hitman's career, he led India to two ICC trophies and will go down in history as one of the biggest stars to have come out of Mumbai and train at the Wankhede Stadium. 

While Rohit has earned the right to have a stand named after him, he has also joined an elite list of India legends to have a stand named after them at the Wankhede Stadium and this article will look at all the big stars to have a named after him. 

1.Sachin Tendulkar

Sachin Tendulkar needs no introduction as the master blaster will go down in history as one of the best cricketers in the world and arguably the best of them all. The Wankhede Stadium has a Sachin Tendulkar stand to honour the legacy of the Master Blaster.

Talking about Sachin's stats, the right-hand batter has scored 343257 runs in 664 matches, the most by any player in the history of the sport. Not just a stand, but Sachin also has a life-size statue after him at the Wankhede Stadium. 

2.Sunil Gavaskar

India legend and former opener Sunil Gavaskar is another star of the game, who has a stand named after him at the Wankhede Stadium. Gavaskar, who was the first cricketer to score 10,000 Test runs, has 34 Test centuries to his name and held the title of leading run-getter in Test cricket for the longest time.

Talking about his stats, Sunny G has scored 13214 runs in 233 matches, which includes 35 centuries. 

3.Vijay Merchant

Vijay Merchant is another star batter to have a stand named after him at the Wankhede Stadium. Merchant, who featured for India from 1933 to 1951, played 10 Tests and was considered the best batter of his time. 

4. Dilip Vengsarkar

Another big star that features in this list is Dilip Vengsarkar. The 69-year-old played for India from 1976 to 1992, where he featured in 118 Tests and scored 6000+ runs in Tests and also 3500 runs in ODI cricket. 

5.Ajit Wadekar

Alongside Rohit Sharma, another former India cricketer set to have a stand named after him is Ajit Wadekar. MCA, during the April resolution, decided to have a stand named after Rohit Sharma and Ajit Wadekar. 

Talking about Wadekar, he played for India from 1966 to 1974, where he played 37 Tests and 2100 runs. He is also awarded with Arjuna award.
