'More Than Anything, We’ve Spoken About...': Faf du Plessis Hints at South Africa Comeback

In what could be encouraging news for South Africa cricket, former skipper Faf du Plessis has indicated that he could make a return to national colours soon, given the batter is in talks with white-ball head coach Rob Walter. Walter after being appointed as South Africa's limited-overs coach opened up about potentially conducting talks with du Plessis for a possible comeback in the international arena.

Du Plessis, who retired from Tests in 2021, but is still available for white-ball cricket. However, the former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) player was ignored by SA selectors for the 2021 and 2022 ICC T20 World Cup campaigns.

The 38-year-old has been in red-hot form in T20 leagues, slamming 369 runs in the inaugural SA20 League for Joburg Super Kings, and is the leading run-getter in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 with 631 runs for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

Speaking to NDTV, du Plessis revealed that he might feature in the T20 World Cup 2024 and not the upcoming ICC World Cup 2023.

Here's what Du Plessis said

“I’m very grateful that the new coach has reached out to tell me that he would like me to be a part (of the team). At the moment, it’s just conversations to talk about where I’m at physically.

50-over cricket is a different story. Obviously, it’s a longer format. You’re on the field a lot more… We’ll cross that bridge after the IPL, moving into the latter part of the year. More than anything, we’ve spoken about the T20 World Cup next year in July, which is something we both want to make happen. That will be the focus point.”

Walter in a recent interview stated that du Plessis might be fit for T20 cricket and that his participation in the ODI WC is unlikely.

Du Plessis, who is leading RCB this season as well, has a clear shot at reaching the playoffs by winning their final two league stage games, starting this evening, when they take on Sunrisers Hyderabad at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.
