BAN vs ENG: Shakib Al Hasan Scripts History as Bangladesh Avoid Whitewash

Shakib Al Hasan's all-round masterclass helped Bangladesh beat England by 50 runs in the third ODI in Chattogram. Batting first, Bangladesh posted a decent total of 246, thanks to vital half-centuries from Shakib, Mushfiqur Rahim and Najmul Hossain Shanto. In reply, England were bundled out for 196, despite valiant efforts from Chris Woakes.

Shakib Al Hasan's fifty powers Bangladesh to a fighting total

After opting to bat first, Bangladesh got off to a disastrous start, losing openers Tamim Iqbal and Litton Das cheaply inside three overs, courtesy of a Sam Curran masterclass. However, Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mushfiqur Rahim steadied the ship for the hosts, stitching a crucial 98-run stand for the third wicket.

After Shanto was run out for a steady 71-ball 53, Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan further added 38 runs, before the former was cleaned up by Adil Rashid. Rahim's departure opened the floodgates for Bangladesh, as their lower middle order crumbled against England's rampant bowling unit.

However, the experienced Shakib Al Hasan kept the scoreboard ticking with his gorgeous stroke play. Before eventually being dismissed in the 49th over, Shakib took his side to the safe zone through a majestic 71-ball 75, including seven glorious boundaries.

The veteran all-rounder's heroics helped Bangladesh post 246 runs on the board. Jofra Archer was the pick of the bowlers for England with a spectacular three-fer, while Sam Curran and Adil Rashid claimed two wickets apiece.

Bowlers' collective effort seals the deal for Bangladesh

In response, England were off the mark in style, as the in-form Jason Roy and Phil Salt added 54 runs for the opening wicket. However, the dynamics of the game changed within the blink of an eye as soon as Shakib was introduced to the attack.

After outfoxing Roy, the ace spinner went on to dismiss Salt and later a well-set James Vince to put Bangladesh in the driving seat.

Meanwhile, his fellow spinners, Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Taijul Islam played the supporting role to perfection, getting rid of the deadly duo of Sam Curran and Jos Buttler.

Seamer Ebadot Hossain also weaved his magic, claiming the crucial wickets of Dawid Malan and Moeen Ali. Thus, a target which seemed like a walk in the park at the halfway mark, became improbable for the visitors, who were bowled out for 196 in 43.1 overs.
