In a significant development, there are reports that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli wanted to continue his Test cricket journey, but India coach Gautam Gambhir wanted new faces for the upcoming cycle of WTC and he got the full backing of BCCI and selector Ajit Agarkar.
According to a report from Hindustan Times, Rohit and Kohli's future was decided after thumping defeat against Australia which eliminated India's chances to qualify for WTC final. Notably, the report mentioned that the Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir was against the star culture within the team and also wanted new faces for the upcoming England tour and also the WTC cycle.
"The Gautam Gambhir era begins now. He was categorical that during the next WTC cycle, India need to have fresh faces, Everyone associated with decision-making knew where Gambhir stood in terms of carrying seniors in the longest format. Obviously, his and chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar's thoughts aligned," the source added.
Rohit And Virat's Recent Remarks Hint At No Plans Of Retirement
While, Gautam Gambhir wanted new faces for the upcoming WTC, it is evident that both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli had no plans of retirement and their recent remarks also hint at that. Notably, Rohit, who appeared on Michael Clarke's podcast recently had opened up on his plans to play in the England series and confirmed his availability.
Meanwhile, Delhi Ranji coach confirmed that Virat spoke to him and remarked that he is looking to hit a few centuries in the upcoming tour. Thus, it is evident that the two stars had to bow out of the traditional format of the game because of board and management's wish to continue with new faces.
