The much-hyped Big Bash League (BBL) 2022-23 gets underway today with the Sydney Thunder taking on the Melbourne Stars today in Canberra.

The Thunder, who named their 15-man squad for the tournament opener, also included their new signee, Toby Gray. Gray, a leg-spinner, comes into the Thunder set-up as a local replacement player.

The 21-year-old recently made his First-Class debut for New South Wales. The leg-spinner had an impressive first match, picking up three wickets against Western Australia in a Sheffield Shield 2022-23 encounter.

Andrew Gilchrist, head of the Sydney Thunder,  called Gray a player with enormous promise.

"Toby is a player with great potential. He recently made his Sheffield Shield debut and performed very well in good company,

"He’s needed no time at all to make an impression on the squad, and we’re excited to think of what the future holds for him."

Meanwhile, Jason Sangha, the Thunder captain, sounded excited about the prospect of Gray and said, "Toby is a tremendous kid with a good head on his shoulders."

Gray represented the Belmont District Cricket Club before making his place in the NSW team.
