Angelo Mathews' blistering knock goes in vain as Jaffna Kings beat Colombo Stars by 6 runs

Jaffna Kings swatted aside Colombo Stars by six runs in the 10th match of the ongoing Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2022, played at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Monday, December 12. 

Chasing the stiff target of 179 runs, the Stars had a dreadful start, losing their top four batters – Niroshan Dickwella, Nishan Madushka (1), Navod Paranavithana (8), and Charith Asalanka (3) – cheaply when the team’s score read 34 in 6.4 overs. 

Then, captain Angelo Mathews and lower-order batter Benny Howell tried to save the sinking ship. The duo stitched a crucial partnership worth 90 runs for the eighth wicket before Howell (43 off 20) perished in the final over. 

Mathews kept the fight alive however the Stars fell just six runs short of the target. Skipper Matthews remained unbeaten for 73 runs off 38 deliveries. His flamboyant knock was laced with eight boundaries and three sixes.

For Jaffna Kings, James Fuller, and Vijayakanth Viyaskanth starred with the ball, picking two wickets each. The likes of Thisara Perera, Maheesh Theekshana, and Asitha Fernando have also got a brace each.



Shoaib Malik Shined As Jaffna Posted Stiff Total of 178/5

Earlier, Jaffna Kings posted a competitive total of 178 runs for the loss of five wickets in the allotted 20 overs after being asked to bat first.  

Rahmanullah Gurbaz (17 off 11) and Avishka Fernando (32 off 31) provided the team with a flying start, stitching a 35-run partnership for the first wicket. 

Later, the likes of Ashan Randika (27 off 14), and Sandeera Samarawickrama (32 off 25) also chipped in with useful contributions.

In the end, Pakistan star all-rounder Shoaib Malik and Thisara Perera starred with the willow to take their team towards a competitive total. 

While Malik smoked five boundaries and scored an unbeaten 35 from 26 deliveries, Perera smashed a quick 29 off 13 balls, including three boundaries and a six. 

For Colombo Stars, Benny Howell was the pick of the bowlers as he picked up two wickets while conceding 37 runs in his four overs quota.
