ECB Chief Richard Thompson says The Hundred is worth way more than £400m

It has been reported that Bridgepoint Group had offered to buy a 75% stake in the English domestic franchise league 'The Hundred' for £400m. To which the English and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) retorted that the franchise league is way more than just £400m.

ECB chief Richard Thompson stated that both the tournament and the teams are currently owned by the board and that it was way too early to contemplate a sale. Even though the tournament has received a lot of critics, it is one of the most successful. Players and pundits have pointed out that the tournament could very well catalyse English cricket and produce worthwhile talent.

Considering that the tournament also has a women's edition and what it has done for women's cricket, critics have calmed down. Both Thompson and incoming ECB Chief Executive Richard Gould opposed the idea in the starting stages but then changed their minds once they saw the tournament's impact.

Richard Thompson in no hurry to sell the game short

"The Hundred has created an awful lot of interest in private equity markets, Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL sold for nearly $1bn, so I would say a tournament is worth a lot more."

"We've got a long way to go before we do something. We will not sell the game short. The ECB needs to think very long and hard if we were to sell four or five weeks of the summer to a third party. That would be a huge decision for us to take."

"We have to take a competition like this very seriously, there is a feeding frenzy around world cricket and private equity so I'm not surprised we had an offer."
