Team India justified their table-topping run this Women’s T20 Asia Cup by finishing off their league stage with a huge win over Thailand Women. The ‘Women in Blue’ humbled a high-flying Thailand unit by snapping their three-game winning streak in Sylhet.

Women’s T20 Asia Cup 2022: Sneh Rana makes life easy for batters in run-chase

Indian captain Smriti Mandhana, filling in for Harmanpreet Kaur, had earlier won the toss and opted to field first.

The Thailand batters started cautiously, before mayhem ensued in the third over of the innings. Natthakan Chantham chopped on to her stumps off India’s enigma machine Deepti Sharma, while her opening partner Nannapat Koncharoenkai fell short of her crease to a direct hit a while later.

Apart from Koncharoenkai’s 12 at the top, none of the other Thailand batters managed to better a mere seven scored by all-rounder Nattaya Boochatham in the middle overs.

Indian bowlers, especially spinner Sneh Rana, feasted off her opponents with a three-wicket spell. T20 veterans Sharma and Rajeshwari Gayakwad also made full use off the dust bowl at Sylhet, as the two spinners claimed two wickets each, all while limiting the run-flow from their ends.

Indian Women knocked off their 38-run task within the powerplay, with opener Sabbhineni Meghana still intact at the crease. In-form Shafali Verma was India’s only casualty in the run-chase, as the attacking batter top-edged one to cover off the bowling of Boochatham.

The nine-wicket win granted India Women their fifth of the tournament, as they look top-contenders to finish the league stage at the top of the table. It also marked India’s biggest win in T20Is, in terms of balls remaining (84). They bettered their 2019 effort against West Indies, where they won with 57 deliveries still in hand.

The Pakistan team have an outside chance of dethroning them from the top, if they happen to win their next game against Sri Lanka Women with a big margin.

Brief scores:

Thailand Women: 37 (15.1)

Nannapat Koncharoenkai 12 (19), Nattaya Boochatham 7 (17)
