Ottis Gibson reflects on Yorkshire's disappointing loss against Essex

Yorkshire County Cricket Club's head coach Ottis Gibson urged his team to learn from the mistakes after losing the game against Essex.

Shane Snater’s aggressive unbeaten 68 secured a thrilling one-wicket win over Yorkshire inside three days to record a victory at Headingley for Essex, their first Championship win at Headingley since 1984.

Despite Steve Patterson and Ben Coad's valiant efforts, Yorkshire failed to get over the line as Snater's heroics guided Essex to a win in the Division one game of the County Championship.

Born in Barbados, ex-all-rounder Gibson represented the West Indies in two Test Matches and 15 One Day Internationals during a 17-year long playing career, and since retiring has become a highly-regarded coach around the world. He joined Yorkshire earlier this year as the new head coach of the team post-racism saga.

Speaking after the game, Yorkshire head coach Gibson said that although the conditions were challenging for the batters on the opening day, he felt that the players should have scored  more than 134.

The cricketer turned coach also lauded the efforts of Snater for helping his team to get over the line in a cliffhanger.

“Not just today, we showed a lot over the three days. On the first day, in the conditions we had to bat in, the ball was doing a lot under the lights. But I still felt we could have found a way to get a few more runs (than 134). Then we had them 85-5 or 6 in their first innings and (Shane) Snater came and played positively like he did today. Those are the lessons I want us to learn. If you go in as a batter and the wicket’s doing a bit and you think there’s one with your name on it, you have to make a choice. ‘Am I going to defend, knowing I might nick one, or am I going to be a bit more positive?’”.
