Andre Russell aspires to win another World Cup for West Indies

The swashbuckling all-rounder Andre Russell has revealed his desire to play international cricket and clinch another World Cup Trophy for the Caribbean team. 

In the past, Russell has been part of the West Indies team, which secured title victories in the 2012 and 2016 editions of the T20 World Cup.

He last donned the maroon jersey in the T20 World Cup 2021, while contributing 25 runs and three wickets in five appearances. Then, the IPL 2022 witnessed Russell scoring 335 runs and taking 17 wickets for KKR. 

Currently, the 34-year-old is plying his trade for Manchester Originals in The Hundred Men's competition. 

In a recent interview, Russell opened up on his future objectives as a career, with also being mindful of his family. He has also urged Cricket West Indies (CWI) to respect his terms. 

"Of course, of course. The maroon is all over," said Russell to Daren Sammy on being asked whether he still wants to play for West Indies. 

"I always want to play and give back. But at the end of the day, if we are not agreeing on certain terms, you terms is my terms [sic], and they have to respect my terms as well. At the end of the day, it is what it is. We have families and we have to make sure that we give our best opportunity while we have one career.

"It's not like I can start over again. I'm 34 and I want to win another World Cup - or two more - for West Indies because at the end of the day, I'm here now, and I'm just taking it day by day."

CWI to provide weightage to CPL for T20 WC selections

Recently, Desmond Haynes, West Indies' lead selector has reckoned that performances in the CWI-run tournaments like the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) will be a major factor for the T20 World Cup selections. 

The likes of Russell, Sunil Narine and Evin Lewis will once again come in the frame for the showpiece event, based on their performances for respective teams in the CPL. 

CPL 2022 is set to be played from August 30 to September 30 in five different venues. All the matches of the last edition took place in Warner Park, St. Kitts.
