The first Test match between India and Australia at the Optus Stadum in Perth is living upto his billing with the pendulum swinging either way in quite a dramatic fashion. Australia dominated the first half of the opening day and it looked like India would crumble under pressure. However, the visitors came back strongly with the ball and grabbed a 46-run lead, it was followed by an extraordinary opening stand between Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul and that has put India in a driver's seat.

The duo notched up a stand of 201 runs and it is now the highest opening stand for India in Test matches in Australia. They have surpassed the legendary opening pair of Sunil Gavaskar and Krishnamachari Srikkanth who had the partnership of 191 runs in the Sydney Test of 1986. The third pair in the list again features Sunil Gavaskar and his opening partner was Chetan Chauhan in 1981. They had a stand of 165 runs at MCG, so this is the first double-hundred stand between Indian openers Down Under and speaks a lot about how difficult it is to open in Australia.

Highest Opening Partnerships for India in Tests in Australia:

  • 201 - Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul, Perth, This Match, 2024
  • 191 - Sunil Gavaskar and Krishnamachari Srikkanth, Sydney, 1986
  • 165 - Sunil Gavaskar and Chetan Chauhan, Melbourne, 1981

The opening stand has put India in firm control, and Yashasvi Jaiswal has notched up his fourth double hundred. Rahul though missed out on his well-deserved century as Starc got the better of him at a score of 77. India are in control now, and would looking to post a big second innings with almost full three days remaining in the match.
