Why Is Babar Azam Opening For Pakistan vs South Africa In 2nd Test?

Pakistan's star cricketer Babar Azam came out to bat in the ongoing second Test against South Africa on January 4, 2024. He opted to bat after the unfortunate injury to rising star Saim Ayub. The 22-year-old opener was ruled out of the match after suffering a severe ankle injury on Day 1 of the ongoing Test at Newlands.

As a result, Babar Azam, who has often been regarded as one of the most consistent batter for Pakistan, has been entrusted with the task of opening the innings alongside Shan Masood for the second Test. 

Why Is Babar Azam Playing As An Opener vs SA?

Babar Azam's his versatility and skill at the crease make him an ideal candidate to anchor the innings in the absence of Ayub. While his usual position is in the middle-order in Test, he will need to adapt to this role for Pakistan in this challenging Test match. It is important to mention that, Ayub, has been playing as an aggressive opener for Pakistan, before his ankle was twisted while chasing a delivery from Ryan Rickelton.

South Africa Dominates Pakistan In 1st Innings

Talking about the match, Pakistan is already in trouble and has found themselves reeling against Proteas total. Chasing the target, Shan Masood failed as an opener already and fell for  mear 2 runs. After that, Kamran Ghulam also failed miserably as he was looking to consolidate, and dismissed for 12. 

Earlier in the match, South Africa produced a masterclass with the bat, with significant contribution by Ryan Rickelton. He made 259 runs off 343 runs decorated with magnificent 29 fours and three sixes. He was well supported by wicketkeeper-batter Kyle Verreynne, who brought up his century, scoring 100 runs. In the Lower-order Marco Jansen and Keshav Maharaj helped South Africa extend their dominance.
