In a troubling chapter of what has become a recurring saga, Victorian cricketer Will Pucovski was forced to retire hurt after a harrowing incident that saw him struck on the helmet by a bouncer from fast bowler Riley Meredith during a Sheffield Shield match against Tasmania at Hobart's Bellerive Oval.

The 26-year-old, who has faced a tumultuous battle with concussion throughout his career, found himself in a frightful situation, collapsing onto the pitch in severe discomfort.

The Will Puckovski getting hit on the helmet incident unfolded on Sunday as he was attempting to evade a menacing delivery, and ducked into the path of the ball.

The impact was immediate and distressing, with the top-order batter dropping his bat and succumbing to the ground, a sight that sent shivers down the spine of spectators.

Medical staff were quick to attend to him, and after a few tense minutes, Pucovski was able to leave the field, albeit in a visibly shaken state, holding his head as he walked off.

The dreadful incident prompted Victoria to activate a concussion substitute, with Campbell Kellaway stepping in to fill the void left by Pucovski for the remainder of the match.

In a statement to Fox Cricket, Cricket Victoria confirmed, "Will is currently in the hands of our medical professionals. We’ll look to provide an update in due course."

It is worth mentioning that Pucovski's love affair with the game has been marred by his unfortunate acquaintance with concussions.

Despite his talent, which was on full display during a century knock against New South Wales at the SCG last month—his first first-class hundred in over three years—his journey has been filled with periods of absence from the sport, often due to injury or mental health considerations.

After taking a six-week hiatus from cricket to focus on his mental well-being during the 2018/19 season, Pucovski's return to the field has been proof of his determination.

However, the shadow of concussion has loomed large with a series of setbacks keeping him out of action for significant stretches.

Pucovski's international debut in the 2021 New Year’s Test against India offered a glimpse of what could be, with a promising innings that suggested the dawn of a new star.

Although fate had other plans, as a shoulder injury shortly thereafter and subsequent concussion issues sidelined him for much of the following seasons.
