Nathan Lyon backed his superb spell of 4 for 43 in the first innings of the Wellington Test with a magnificent five-wicket haul in the second innings of the opening Test against New Zealand.

The great off-spinner bagged his 24th fifer for Australia in his illustrious Test match career on Day 4 of at the Basin Reserve.

The modern-day legend, who had helped the Australians build inroads into the Kiwi batting line-up and reduced them to 128/5 in defence of the imposing 369-run target, achieved his milestone with a beautiful delivery that got rid of New Zealand's extravagant middle-order batter Glenn Phillips.

Phillips had smashed a counterattacking 71 in the first half of the Test match but could only add one run to his kitty on this occasion as he was done in by a sharp turning delivery from around-the-wicket angle and was given out plumb LBW.

The delivery from Lyon was perfect in the way it drifted from the angle wide of the crease and then dipped on the right-hander before turning in sharply to hammer his back leg. It was a no-brainer for umpire Marais Erasmus to raise his finger and send Phillips on his way back to the shed.

For Lyon, it was a moment of great ecstasy as he recorded yet another five-wicket haul in Test cricket and then ended the innings with figures of 6 for 65 to complete victory for the tourists while finishing his game with 10 wickets

Lyon had earlier played a priceless knock of 41 in the third-innings for Australia and helped extend their first-innings advantage to a hefty target. He was one of the contenders to win the 'Player of the Match' award but was pipped to the title by centurion Cameron Green
