South African captain Temba Bavuma led his team from the front against rampaging Sri Lankan bowlers on Day 2 of the first Test match in Durban. Arriving to the crease after the early loss of both South African openers, Bavuma punched out a fighting 70 from 117 balls with nine boundaries and a six.

His top-scoring act ensured the Proteas chart a competitive 191 from nearly 50 overs in the first innings after having their entire top-order flattened at 85-5 at one stage of the match.

Temba Bavuma flies, upper cuts for a six

While batting with the tail, Temba Bavuma upper cut Sri Lanka’s raging pacer Lahiru Kumara for a six over the slip cordon to take South Africa to the brink of the 150-run mark. Responding to Kumara’s short delivery, Bavuma maneuvered himself around the crease before making a leap to unleash a successful ramp.

Earlier in the match, Lahiru Kumara picked up the key South African wickets of Tristan Stubbs, David Bedingham and Kyle Verreynne to eventually finish with figures of 3-70 from 12 overs. New ball operator Asitha Fernando also picked up the prized scalp of opener Aiden Markram before mopping up the Proteas tail to bag 3-44. Vishwa Fernando and in-form spinner Prabath Jayasuriya chipped in with two wickets each as Sri Lanka enveloped the entire South African line-up for just 191 in 49.4 overs.

For South Africa, captain Temba Bavuma top-scored with a swift 70, while tailender Keshav Maharaj was the only other batter to cross the 20-run mark.

Despite keeping South Africa down to a modest total, Sri Lanka conceded their early advantage by crumbling out for just 42 in 13.5 overs. Lanky paceman Marco Jansen rattled the visitors with a career-best haul of 7-13. Kagiso Rabada drew the first blood with the wicket of a Sri Lankan opener while Gerald Coetzee bagged the remaining two wickets on offer.
