Former IPL governor Lalit Modi recently made headlines by making sensational claims against some of the bigwigs of the tournament. One of the biggest controversial figures of Indian cricket, Modi’s tenure as League Commissioner coincided with a significant rise in the popularity of IPL the world over.
Here, we take a detailed look at the journey of the man, often credited for laying the foundational stones of one of the biggest sporting leagues in the world.
Who is Lalit Modi?
As the first league commissioner of IPL, Lalit Modi is often described as one of the leading brains and one of the founding members of the tournament. Born in November 1963 to prominent businessman Krishan Kumar Modi and his wife Bina Modi, Lalit’s penchant for monopolizing cricket can be traced back to his visionary approach and innovative strategies, which revolutionized India’s favorite sport by introducing a global franchise-based league model.
Apart from being the founder and a League Commissioner, Lalit Modi was also the first chairman of the IPL, and ran the league for three years from its inauguration until the 2010 chapter of the annual T20 competition. Moreover, the cricket administrator also oversaw the then newly-formed Champions League T20 as Chairman during the same period.
As President of the Rajasthan Cricket Association from 2005 to 2009, as vice president of the Punjab Cricket Association between 2004 and 2012 and as the vice president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) from 2005 till 2010; Lalit Modi had already garnered much influence over Indian cricket before helming and laying out early stones for the IPL.
Shortly after the conclusion of the IPL 2010 season, he was suspended by the BCCI over being accused of fraudulent activities and financial indiscretions. Moreover, he was also banned for life in the IPL by the BCCI in 2013 amidst an investigation against him.
What did Lalit Modi say about CSK, KKR owners in 2024?
During an explosive interview in November 2024, Lalit Modi accused former BCCI President and Chennai Super Kings owner N. Srinivasan of ‘indirect fixing’ of IPL matches through appointing Chennai-based umpires in CSK games.
Moreover, Modi also stated that Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan initially wanted to acquire the Mumbai-based franchise in IPL before settling down for Kolkata. The Indian cricket administrator further revealed that due to his zero policy towards corruption in cricket, he became a target of the underworld and even received death threats from mob boss Dawood Ibrahim.
