After over seven years, Steve Smith returned as Australia's captain in England when they were up against each other in the fifth and final ODI of a hugely contested series. The 35-year-old did not disappoint in his memorable day, smashing 36 not out of 48 balls to help his side win the series decider in a rain-marred contest.

Steve Smith Shines With Bat As Australia's Captain

During his stay, Smith, who did the captaincy in the absence of Mitchell Marsh, smashed four fours and one six to bring joy to Australian fans. His six was more audacious as he brought his wrists into play to make it look more special. The bowler, who was at the receiving end, was Brydon Carse.

Smith's six came during the 17th over of Australia's innings when Carse bowled a short-of-a-length delivery. Smith shuffled across a bit before picking it up magnificently and sending it over deep square leg for six runs.

Batting first, England were bowled out for 309 in 49.2 overs, with Ben Duckett continuing his purple patch with a spectacular century. Harry Brook also shone with the bat, making 72 runs off just 52 balls, only to see it go in vain in the end.

Australia's aggressive start set the tone for the match. Matthew Short's quickfire 58* off 30 balls and Travis Head's 31 off 26 balls initiated the onslaught. The momentum was carried forward by Smith and Josh Inglis, who scored 28* off 20 balls, taking Australia to 165/2 in 20.4 overs. However, the game was abruptly halted by rain, with no further play possible. This unexpected turn of events led to Australia's victory, as they were ahead by 49 runs using the DLS method.
