Oman captain and number three batter Aqib Ilyas failed to lead his team to recovery after the early dismissal of opener Naseem Khushi against Scotland. Turning up for his country in match number 20 of the ongoing 2024 T20 World Cup in Antigua, the cricketer made his way back to the pavilion after bludgeoning a six and a couple of boundaries during his six-ball stay at the crease.

Ilyas failed to read an angling delivery from Scotland fast bowler Safyaan Sharif inside the opening powerplay as Oman slipped to 44-2 in 5.2 overs.

Prior to the match, Oman skipper Aqib Ilyas won the toss and opted to bat first. His openers, however, failed to justify his call as Naseem Khushi was dismissed for just nine in the third over of the match. Arriving to the crease in a bid to lead Oman’s recovery, Ilyas at number three struck a couple of fluent boundaries and launched a huge six off Chris Sole to race to 16* from just five balls.

Hoping to maximize the most out of the powerplay overs, the 31-year-old also attacked seasoned Scottish pacer Safyaan Sharif only to miss his angling delivery towards the leg stump. Ilyas was subsequently adjudged out LBW by the on-field umpires as Oman lost its second wicket at 44-2.

As it turned out, Sharif acknowledged the occasion by mimicking the ‘SIUUU’ celebration popularized by football legend Cristiano Ronaldo.

Following the dismissal of Oman captain, middle-order batters Zeeshan Maqsood and Khalid Kail failed to register double-digit scores as their team crumbled its way to 71-4 in 8.5 overs.
