During the fourth match of the ongoing 10th season of the Women’s Big Bash League between Hobart Hurricanes and Sydney Thunder at the Bellerive Oval, HH-W spinner Samantha Bates emerged as the pick of their bowlers to play a key role in reducing the opposition to 141/7 in 20 overs.
Asked to bat first by visiting captain Phoebe Litchfield, the home team managed a respectable innings total primarily due to all-rounder Nicola Carey’s fifth WBBL half-century. Coming in to bat at No. 3 in the second over, Carey scored 52 (38) with the help of seven fours.

Bates, who opened the bowling alongside pacer Shabnim Ismail (0/30), ended up with bowling figures of 4-0-20-3. Her third wicket was a classical dismissal for a left-arm spinner as she bowled Chloe Tryon (0) around her legs in her final over.
Wanting to sweep a ball pitched outside the leg stump, the right-handed batter missed making any contact with the ball. With the ball turning the conventional way, she failed to avoid it hitting the stumps. Thus, becoming the sixth batter to get out in the first innings.
With some help from fellow all-rounder Georgia Adams (1/16), who grabbed the catch of WBBL 10 thus far, Bates had earlier managed to draw first blood in the second over. It was in her third over that she sent Heather Graham (2) back to the pavilion to continue denting the hosts.
