The ongoing Irani Cup 2024 clash between Mumbai and the Rest of India (ROI) at the Ekana Stadium saw Mumbai pile up a formidable first-innings total of 537/10. After being invited to bat first, Mumbai's innings began on a shaky note, with their top order faltering. Prithvi Shaw and Ayush Mhatre failed to provide a solid start to the innings. Wicketkeeper Hardik Tamore was also dismissed cheaply, which left Mumbai reeling at 62/3.

The Sarfaraz Khan Show

However, seasoned campaigners Ajinkya Rahane and Shreyas Iyer took charge and stabilized the innings with a 102-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Mumbai found resilience in Sarfaraz Khan, who not only held his ground but went on to produce a monumental innings.

His unbeaten 222 in 286 balls became the backbone of Mumbai's mammoth total. Sarfaraz Khan dominated the Rest of India's attack and showcased his defensive and aggressive ability to play.

Ruturaj Gaikwad Departs Early

In response to Mumbai's imposing total, the Rest of India got off to a decent start but suffered an early blow when Ruturaj Gaikwad was dismissed for nine mere runs. Gaikwad, who looked tentative during his brief stay at the crease, fell to Juned Khan in the 11th over.

Juned bowled a good-length delivery just outside off stump, which nipped back in and tempted Gaikwad into a drive. The shot, however, resulted in a thick outside edge, which flew to second slip, where Prithvi Shaw took a diving two-handed catch to his right.

After the loss of Gaikwad, Abhimanyu Easwaran and B Sai Sudharsan took on the responsibility of steadying the innings. The pair managed to hold off the Mumbai bowlers and ensured there was no further damage as they began rebuilding the innings. At the time of writing, Abhimanyu Easwaran and Sudharsan are present at the crease and ROI are at 90/1.
