In a dramatic turn of events at the ongoing Irani Cup 2024 clash, Mumbai all-rounder Shardul Thakur had to be rushed to the hospital following the conclusion of Day 2 at the Ekana Cricket Stadium. The cricketer, battling a high fever, showcased sheer grit as he powered through his illness to contribute a vital 36 off 59 deliveries, helping his team edge past the 500-run mark.

Shardul Thakur Fought Fever to Keep Mumbai in the Hunt

Despite his deteriorating condition, Shardul Thakur, known for his fighting spirit, stood tall alongside Sarfaraz Khan. He took breaks throughout his innings to receive medical attention but was determined to be there for his team, hitting four boundaries and a six before falling victim to Saransh Jain in the final over of the day.

However, his health took a turn for the worse after spending considerable time at the crease, leading to his immediate hospitalization.

The all-rounder's condition became a cause for concern as the day wore on. According to a report by The Indian Express, Thakur will remain under medical observation overnight, with doctors assessing his condition before Day 3’s play. Blood tests have been conducted to rule out serious illnesses such as malaria or dengue.

A source close to the team revealed the extent of Thakur's struggle, saying, "He was not feeling well for the entire day and was running on high fever, which was the main reason he came out to bat late. He was feeling weak and he slept in the dressing room after taking medicine. But he wanted to bat despite feeling low. We have got his blood test done for malaria and dengue. We are waiting for the results. Till then, he will spend the night in hospital."

This match marked Thakur’s return to competitive cricket after a foot surgery in June. He last played in the IPL 2024 for the Chennai Super Kings. His recent recovery and participation in the KSCA Invitational tournament were meant to be a precursor to this vital Irani Cup appearance.

Shardul Thakur - A Fighter at Heart

Even when the chips are down, Thakur’s spirit on the field speaks volumes of his commitment to the game. His importance to the Indian Test team, especially in overseas conditions, cannot be overstated.

The Mumbai-based cricketer's ability to contribute both with the ball and bat makes him an asset, particularly when the team is looking to add depth to its lineup. With tours to Australia and England looming, Thakur's recovery will be closely monitored.

As Mumbai wrapped up Day 2 at 536/9, thanks to Sarfaraz Khan’s monumental double century and contributions from Ajinkya Rahane, Shreyas Iyer, and Tanush Kotian, the team will undoubtedly feel the absence of their key all-rounder should he be ruled out for the remainder of the game.

In true warrior fashion, Thakur battled through his illness. His health remains the top priority as the team and fans await further updates on his condition.
