The aggressive double fist pump that Roelof van der Merwe is renowned for performing eventually became his signature celebration long ago. The 38-year-old did the same on Monday (October 9) during the Netherlands’ World Cup 2023 fixture against New Zealand, taking place at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad.

The celebration from van der Merwe came after the wicket of Devon Conway, who was having a purple patch after a blistering knock against England in the tournament opener. The southpaw was going strong against the Dutch as well, having made 32 off 40 balls with five fours and one six, before van der Merwe came and gave his side a much-required breakthrough.

In the 13th over, Conway came down the track, and wanted to play a lofted shot over deep mid-wicket. However, the timing was not there at all, and Bas de Leede made no mistake before catching the ball near the boundary line.

Van der Merwe's celebration indicated it was perfectly trapped, and they got the result they were looking for.

At the time of writing, New Zealand are 134/1 in 24.4 overs, with Will Young and Rachin Ravindra in middle, 31* and 65* respectively.
