Veteran Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin re-joined the team during the fourth day of the third Test against England in Rajkot after a family medical emergency forced him to miss day three's play.

Ashwin, who achieved the remarkable feat of 500 Test wickets earlier in the match, had to leave for Chennai to attend to his ailing mother immediately after reaching this milestone.

He is welcomed back by the visitor's team fan base through their social media post on 'X', "Welcome back Ravi, good to see you. He’s returned from his family emergency".

The Indian team's vice president, Rajeev Shukla, confirmed Ashwin's absence on day three due to his mother's hospitalization.

Ashwin became the second Indian and ninth bowler overall to reach the 500th Test wicket milestone earlier in the match.

Talking about the match, India posted a target of 557 for the visitors with the help of Yashasvi Jaiswal, who scored a brilliant double-century. After tea on day 4, the visitors were 39/4 and needed 518 more runs to win, and what is interesting to watch is that Ashwin, being available to bowl anytime, had not bowled a single ball so far in the innings.

The 5-test match series is level at 1-1, and the return of Ashwin will play a key role in making India take a 2-1 lead in the series.
