Former Indian cricketer, Sanjay Manjrekar has expressed high admiration for young Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal following his impressive century on the third day of the Rajkot Test against England on Saturday.

Manjrekar was particularly impressed with Jaiswal's ability to transition from a cautious approach to an aggressive batting style reminiscent of T20 cricket during his innings.

Yashasvi Jaiswal's knock of 104 off 133 balls, which included nine fours and five sixes, came to an end when he had to retire hurt due to back spasms. Initially adopting a careful strategy, Jaiswal unleashed his attack in the latter part of his innings, taking the English bowlers to task.

Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Manjrekar noted that Jaiswal's shift from a conservative start to an explosive batting display showcased his adaptability and skill. He remarked that despite Jaiswal's initial defensive play, which he attributed to a possibly preconceived notion of playing cautiously, the batsman's true colours shone through once he began to accelerate.

“I was a little worried with how he started off. I felt he came in pre-conditioned to play defensively because he is a naturally attacking player. But slowly he opened up and once he opened up, it was amazing how he went from Test mode to pure T20 mode. The strike rate he attained after the first 50 balls was in keeping with the T20 game,” said Manjrekar.

Manjrekar further praised Jaiswal's technical brilliance and wide range of shots, including defensive strokes, sweeps, reverse-sweeps, and powerful drives, suggesting that these attributes point to a promising future for the young cricketer.

“To begin with he showed some technique with defensive shots but after that is what made him special. We saw the sweep, the reverse-sweep, the switch-side sweep as well plus the drives that he plays beautifully. He’s got the power game as well. He’s got all the ingredients to become a special player. This was another reminder of the exceptional ability he has,” added the Indian veteran.

As of Day 4, despite having to retire hurt the previous day, Jaiswal returned to bat after Shubman Gill's dismissal for 91 and continued his remarkable form, scoring 214 not out and extending India's lead to 556 runs.
