During the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) 2024 Match 28 between the Dindigul Dragons and Nellai Royal Kings, cricket's notorious 'Mankad' advocate, Ravichandran Ashwin, found himself at the sharp end of the stick.

Ashwin, usually the enforcer of the controversial dismissal, was nearly given a taste of his own medicine in the high-voltage clash.

It all happened ahead of the second delivery of the 15th over. Nellai Royal Kings bowler Mohan Prasath noticed Ravichandran Ashwin stepping out of his crease prematurely.

In a moment brimming with tension, Prasath halted his run-up, catching Ashwin with his bat merely on the line—a position that could have spelled his dismissal had Prasath chosen to knock off the bails.

Instead, opting for a gentleman’s approach, Prasath returned to his mark and requested the umpire to issue a caution to Ashwin, sparing him the ignominy of being out in a fashion he famously endorsed.

This incident is particularly ironic given Ashwin's history with the 'Mankad' dismissal, most notably during the IPL 2019.

As captain of the then Punjab Kings, Ashwin dismissed Jos Buttler of the Rajasthan Royals, sparking widespread debate and bringing the 'Mankad' dismissal into the limelight.

Despite escaping the 'Mankad', Ashwin's day didn't improve. He was later run out for a modest 15 runs off 13 balls, contributing to Dindigul Dragons' total of 136 all out. At the time of reporting, the Royals Kings have responded with 26/1 after three overs, needing another 111 runs with 17 overs to spare.

As the match continues, the Ashwin TNPL Mankad incident has added another layer to the ongoing discourse surrounding one of cricket’s most contentious rules, with the veteran spinner now experiencing both sides of the coin.
