[Watch] Rashid Khan's 'Friendly Chat' With Joel Wilson After DRS Snub

Umpire Joe Wilson handed Rashid Khan a raw deal after a questionable 'umpire's call' helped New Zealand right-hander Glen Phillips survive a near-plumb LBW shout in the ICC World Cup 2023 league-stage encounter played in Chennai on Wednesday (October 18).

As Rashid unraveled his incisive googly to beat the threatening Phillips on a forward defensive stroke, the Kiwi maverick seemed to be gone for all money since the delivery from the Afghan spin king dipped in from the angle and turned sharply to evade his inside edge.

The only doubt would've been the impact, but by the naked eye, Phillips seemed to have been hit in line with the off-stump. A googly turning sharply into the right-hander from this contact point is bound to hit the stumps. However, Wilson assumed the impact was just outside the line and adjudged the batter not out.

It was a call upheld by the Decision Review System (DRS) after the technology backed the 'umpire's call' on not just the impact but also the contact with the stumps. The ball was brushing the top of the middle-order stump without a decisive contact on the predicted path, which wouldn't have mattered had Wilson not given Phillips 'not out' in the first place.

The moment the third umpire persisted with the on-field decision, Rashid wore a frustrated look on his face, picked up the ball from Wilson, and indulged in animated discussion with the umpire during the mid-over drinks break.

Even though the cricketer didn't unleash any anger towards the standing official, one could sense his disappointment and empathize with him for being denied a straightforward LBW shout. Wilson probably based his decision on the exaggerated forward press from Phillips, which might have made it appear to him in a split-second look that the impact was in doubt.

Not for Rashid and Afghanistan, though. They were absolutely convinced they had their man. It was also a potential partnership-breaking moment for the Afghan side after Phillips and stand-in captain Tom Latham helped the Black Caps recover from 110/4 by adding 144 runs for the fifth wicket.
