The Indian team management will likely field the same playing XI for Bangladesh clash as they did against arch-rivals Pakistan at the 2023 World Cup last week. Bowling coach Paras Mhambrey pretty much confirmed the same during a pre-match press conference on Wednesday, a day before their much-awaited fixture against Bangladesh in Pune.

Mhambrey on Shami and Ashwin selection

Mohammed Shami and Ravichandran Ashwin are set to miss out from India’s playing XI for their World Cup 2023 clash against Bangladesh. While the speedster is yet to play a single match in the ongoing tournament, the ace spinner found himself in the starting XI in India’s opening contest against Australia on a spin-friendly Chennai wicket.

Ashwin was replaced by Shardul Thakur in India’s next two matches against Afghanistan and Pakistan respectively, and the trend will likely continue for team’s subsequent World Cup 2023 outing against Bangladesh. Bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, during a pre-match press conference, said:

“Yeah, I think it’s important to maintain this start really. So as of now, there is no discussion of kind of rotation from our point of view. I think it is important to carry this momentum for the next game as well. No thought as such.”

Mhambrey further stated that the team management will only pick either Mohammed Shami or Ravichandran Ashwin at some stage of the competition when their presence is best-suited for the wicket they are about to play. He added that the two cricketers have been made very clear about their roles in the side, and leaving out either of them from the playing XI was never an easy decision to be made. He claimed:

“See, honestly, it is never an easy decision. But I think the conversations are around. We had a clear chat with Mohammed Shami. Whenever we select a squad, the message from us is very clear. That we pick a squad we feel is the best for that wicket. Someone like him is missing out, someone like Ravichandran Ashwin will miss out. And I think that’s the communication that we have with him, we are very clear.”

Team India will face Bangladesh on October 19 and their much-awaited duel will be hosted by the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune.
