Mujeeb Ur Rahman drew first blood for Afghanistan on Wednesday (October 18) during their World Cup 2023 clash against New Zealand at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. The 22-year-old trapped Devon Conway leg-before during the seventh over of the Kiwis' innings after Hashmatullah Shahidi won the toss and asked them to bat.
Batting on 20 off 18 balls, Conway was hit on his pads by Mujeeb, who outwitted the Kiwi opener with a quicker delivery. A loud appeal came straight after, but on-field umpire Joel Wilson did not raise his finger.
After a few discussions, Shahidi decided to challenge the decision, and got the result he was looking for.
The replay showed the ball would have broken the middle and leg stumps, had it not hit Conway’s pads.

A loud cheer came from the Afghan camp as soon as it came on the giant screen. Conway, meanwhile, had to walk back to the pavilion after a poor outing at his second home, where he plays for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
As of writing, New Zealand are 43/1 after 9.4 overs, with Will Young and Rachin Ravindra in the middle, on 23* and 0* respectively.
