South Africa’s experienced pace attack decimated Afghanistan’s entire batting line-up in the first semifinal of the 2024 T20 World Cup at Trinidad’s Brian Lara Stadium. Captain Rashid Khan, who punched out a couple of confident boundaries in a bid to lead his team to some respectability, also lost his off-stump to a searing delivery from Proteas quick Anrich Nortje in the 11th over of the match.

Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan, batting at number eight, arrived to the crease at 28-6 following the dismissal of Azmatullah Omarzai. Upon his arrival, Rashid was greeted with a couple of back-of-a-length deliveries, a scorching bouncer and a few words from Proteas paceman Anrich Nortje.

As tempers continued to flare up between the two cricketers at Trinidad’s Brian Lara Stadium, Rashid Khan responded back with two confident boundaries to take his team near the 50-run mark. However, in the 11th over of the innings, the all-rounder lost his off-stump to an angling delivery from the speedster as Afghanistan slipped to 50-9 in the high-stakes semifinal.

Afghanistan eventually bundled out for just 56 in 11.5 overs after having won the toss and opted to bat first. South Africa’s opening fast bowler Marco Jansen took three wickets in his opening spell, all inside the powerplay overs, while Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje chipped in with two wickets each. In-form Proteas spinner Tabraiz Shamsi piled on the momentum by mopping up the Afghanistan tail to finish with figures of 3-6 from 1.5 overs.
