Cameron Green blazed his way to a remarkable Australian recovery against New Zealand on Day 1 of their series opening first Test match at Wellington. The cricketer bludgeoned 103 unbeaten runs to list his second Test century, and ensured Australia batted out the day despite being precariously placed at 176-6 at one stage.

Batting at number four, Cameron Green arrived to the crease following the early dismissal of Marnus Labuschagne soon after the lunch break. The 24-year-old subsequently led Australia’s recovery alongside opening batsman Usman Khawaja and all-rounder Mitchell Marsh with handy middle-order partnerships.

Marsh’s dismissal in the afternoon session was followed by the early departures of Alex Carey and Mitchell Starc as Australia slipped from 88-2 to 211-7 in 72 overs.

An unbeaten Green, who had reached 57* off 117 balls at one point, batted with the tail and produced his next 46 runs from just 38 balls to bring up his century at the brink of stumps. In the final over of the day itself, the right-hander notched up three boundaries off William O’Rourke to get to his second Test match hundred from 154 deliveries, thus stretching up the Australian total to 279-9 from an 85-over opening day.

Earlier in the day, openers Steve Smith and Usman Khawaja failed to surpass their 30-plus starts while Marnus Labuschagne and Travis Head were accounted for a run each by the New Zealand bowlers.

Captain Pat Cummins added a handy 16 towards the closing stages of the day before he became Rachin Ravindra’s first and only wicket of the innings so far.

New Zealand’s new-ball speedster Matt Henry inflicted the most damage to the Australian line-up as he collected four wickets during his 20-over workload.
