Following the exclusion of Shreyas Iyer from the BCCI's central contracts list for the 2023-24 season, a report has emerged shedding light on the circumstances leading to the decision.

Despite being fit, the report suggests that Iyer's absence from the Ranji Trophy quarter-finals raised eyebrows within the cricketing fraternity.

According to a KKR official speaking to RevSportz, Iyer's decision to prioritize training at the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) Academy over participating in the Ranji Trophy quarter-finals stirred controversy.

However, the official defended Iyer's actions, stating that the skipper was focused on building his workload and strengthening his muscles to overcome back spasms.

"He skipped the IPL to play the World Cup. Even after the surgery, he took three painkiller injections to be pain-free for the World Cup. And yet, the pain returned during the semi-final and the final, and he played through it," the source emphasized.

The official further highlighted Iyer's dedication to the sport, citing his consistent participation in cricket since his return from injury in the Asia Cup 2023. Additionally, Iyer's willingness to play a Ranji Trophy match after returning from South Africa in January showcased his commitment to domestic cricket.

The report also addressed concerns raised by the BCCI regarding Iyer's absence from the Ranji Trophy quarter-finals. It clarified that Iyer had informed the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) of his unavailability due to reported back pain and groin issues. However, an email from the National Cricket Academy (NCA) confirmed that there were no fresh injuries, indicating Iyer's fitness.

Furthermore, the report compared Iyer's situation to other players, questioning the treatment disparity within the BCCI. The official pointed out instances where other players, such as KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya received leniency despite their injury history.
