Mumbai’s number three Musheer Khan and captain Ajinkya Rahane listed cautious half-centuries against Vidarbha on Day 2 of their Ranji Trophy 2024 final at the Wankhede Stadium.

The innings marked young Musheer’s second first-class half-century, and his first of the final after he was dismissed for just six by Vidarbha spinner Harsh Dubey on the opening day of the match.

As it turned out, the 19-year-old batting star celebrated his landmark figure by mimicking the celebration of his elder brother Sarfaraz Khan.

Musheer Khan brought up his half-century in the final over of the day, and eventually finished at an unbeaten 51 off 135 balls by stumps. When the youngster raised his bat to celebrate his 50, his father Naushad urged him to “keep going” while enjoying the proceedings from the Wankhede stands.

Remarkably, Musheer’s elder brother Sarfaraz, who made his Test debut for Team India last month, also celebrated his maiden set of half-centuries at Rajkot in a similar manner. Mumbai’s coaching stalwart Naushad Khan had similarly attended the Test match along with the rest of his family to celebrate son Sarfaraz’s maiden India call-up.

Unbeaten 50s from captain Ajinkya Rahane and Musheer Khan extended Mumbai’s lead to 260 runs by the close of play on Day 2.

Earlier in the match, Mumbai managed to tally 224 in their first innings off the back of lower-order belligerence from all-round apparent Shardul Thakur. Bowlers Dhawal Kulkarni, Shams Mulani and Tanush Kotian led Mumbai’s fightback with the ball as the trio accounted for nine Vidarbha wickets between them.
