Australia pulled off a sensational heist against New Zealand on Day 4 of their second Test at Christchurch to seal their two-match series by a 2-0 margin. Chasing 279 for a win, struggling wicketkeeper-batsman Alex Carey punched out a run-chase masterclass alongside captain and tailender Pat Cummins.

The two cricketers held on to form an unbeaten 61-run partnership for the eighth wicket after the visitors had slipped to 220-7 at one stage.

Carey and Cummins’ collective brilliance seems to have even won over legendary Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who took to X (formerly Twitter) where he expressed words of appreciation for the two Australians.

Ravi Ashwin hails AUS management for backing Carey

Shortly after Australia’s triumphant result over New Zealand at Christchurch, Ravichandran Ashwin took to his social media account and heaped a lavish praise on Pat Cummins and Alex Carey. Ashwin also credited the Australian team management for backing Carey despite the latter’s sustained batting struggles throughout Australia’s Test summer.

Compatible with Ravichandran Ashwin’s claims, Alex Carey had managed to tally just one fifty-plus score since Australia’s three-match home Test series against Pakistan in December 2023.

Even against New Zealand in the recently-concluded series, the 32-year-old wicketkeeper-batter secured just 27 runs from his first three innings before he slapped an unbeaten 98 in tense Australian run-chase at Christchurch.

Australia’s series win in New Zealand solidified Pat Cummins and co. at number two position on the WTC 2023-25 points table.

Team India, having ravaged England 4-1 at home off the back of Ravichandran Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav’s spin dexterity, continue to stay at the top of the standings.
