Sarfaraz Khan blazed his way to yet another scintillating start on debut, this time thwacking the English spinners in the second Indian innings of the Rajkot Test. After crafting a near run-a-ball 62 on Day 1, the youngster shared over 50 runs together with opening batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal, as the Indian lead swelled past the 400-run mark through their effort.

Making his way to the crease at the brink of lunch break, Sarfaraz still found time to smear a couple of boundaries and a six to race to 22* at the end of the first session.

Just a couple of overs before lunch break, unbeaten centurion Yashasvi Jaiswal munched Joe Root for a six over cow corner to get close to his 150-run landmark. Later in the same over, Sarfaraz Khan also swatted the senior Englishman over midwicket for another six, thus bringing up his first maximum of the innings and the second of his debut Test.

Following the lunch break, Yashasvi Jaiswal reached his respective 150 while Sarfaraz Khan added a few more runs to India’s lead. The two batters had originally formed forces following the dismissal of night watchmen Kuldeep Yadav at 258-4.

Earlier in the match, Khan pounded 62 runs off just 66 balls, and countered much of Root’s off-spin threat with relative ease. His innings, coupled with centuries from Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja took India’s total to 445.

Team India bowlers later enveloped the visitors at 319 to gain a 126-run first innings lead. Jaiswal’s imperial 186* and Shubman Gill’s attacking 91 set up foundation of yet another Indian batting masterclass as their lead reached 489 by the fourth afternoon.
