Mumbai Indians star all-rounder Hayley Matthews got the ball spinning at the top as she knocked down Gujarat Giants’ in-form opener Laura Wolvaardt with some sharp turn and cunning flight.
Tasked to bowl the opening over of the Gujarat Giants innings in match number 16 of the ongoing WPL 2024 season, Matthews delivered the timely breakthrough for her side in just the second over of her opening spell.
The wicket marked Gujarat Giants’ first casualty of the innings as they aim to topple the defending champions at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium.
Earlier in the over, Gujarat Giants captain Beth Mooney had sliced Matthews tossed up delivery between short third and backward point for a boundary. Mooney’s opening partner Laura Wolvaardt also joined in the fun a couple of deliveries later with a scorching boundary towards deep midwicket.
As Wolvaardt attempted to replicate her shot, she found her furniture disturbed by Hayley Matthews as the Giants slipped to 18-1 inside their first three overs of the innings.

Laura Wolvaardt’s early dismissal was followed by a century-plus second-wicket partnership between captain Beth Mooney and number three batter Dayalan Hemalatha. Both cricketers listed scintillating half-centuries from their ends to lead Gujarat Giants’ fightback against Harmanpreet Kaur’s Mumbai Indians.
The Giants entered the contest off the back of just one win from their prior five WPL 2024 fixtures, as they find themselves at the bottom of the points table. Meanwhile, defending champions Mumbai Indians are placed just behind table-toppers Delhi Capitals at number two.
