West Indies Captain Hayley Matthews Wins ICC Women's T20I Cricketer 2023 Award

The highly prestigious ICC Women's T20I Cricketer of the Year 2023 was awarded to West Indies captain Hayley Matthews.

Matthews bested other top contestants like Australia's Ellyse Perry, England's Sophie Ecclestone, and Sri Lanka's Chamari Athapaththu to become the second player from West Indies after former captain Stafanie Taylor to win this laurel.

Taylor won the ICC Women's T20I Cricketer of the Year in 2015. In 2023 alone, Matthews 14 T20Is amassed 700 runs and also claimed 19 wickets, showcasing her importance with both bat and ball. 

Matthews is also the No.1 Ranked ICC Women's T2I All-Rounder, and really took off during the West Indies tour of Australia, slamming 310 runs across three matches, including an exceptional 132 during the second T20I chasing 213. 

In a statement, the 25-year-old expressed her joy over receiving the award, having looked up to her idols winning the recognition. 

"I have been really blessed to have a pretty good year with West Indies wearing those colours, performing really well and helping the team. Growing up I saw many of my idols getting these type of awards a lot, so to be able to come out as a player with this award is special for me."

Matthews also had a phenomenal T20 World Cup 2023, where the all-rounder scored 130 runs and picked up four wickets, while also taking four catches in the mid-field. 

Overall in 88 T20Is, Matthews has amassed 2,026 runs with two centuries and ten fifties, apart from clinching 91 wickets.
