Mumbai Indians Women were without their captain and leading scorer, Harmanpreet Kaur, as they took on UP Warriorz in the WPL 2024 fixture earlier today. However, opener Hayley Matthews stepped up on the occasion to take up the scoring duties for her side.

With an aim to claim a hat trick of wins in this WPL 2024 season, defending champions Mumbai Indians Women squared off against UP Warriorz earlier today at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

However, in a major setback, MI-W missed the services of captain Harmanpreet Kaur and frontline pacer Shabnim Ismail. Both the stars were battling niggles, and MI management chose to rest them as a precautionary measure.

Nat Sciver-Brunt replaced Kaur as the skipper, whereas Issy Wong came in for Ismail.

Of course, without Kaur, MI-W looked incomplete, as the skipper was doing most of the job with the willow. But what makes the defending champions stand out is the lineup's ability to step up on a given occasion.

In Harmanpreet Kaur's absence, West Indies opener Hayley Matthews exploded at the top. She opened with Yastika Bhatia and put together 50 runs for the opening stand.

While Yastika departed soon after the Powerplay, Matthews continued her assault from one end. She slammed a gigantic maximum down the ground whilst hitting nine boundaries to bring up her maiden fifty of the WPL 2024 season.

As Matthews reached her fifty, the significance of her innings became apparent, not just in terms of the runs scored but also in the manner in which she approached her innings.

Despite the absence of her regular captain, Matthews remained composed and focused, guiding her team to a strong position with her commanding batting display.

That being said, owing to Matthews's crucial contribution at the top, MI-W manages to bank 161 runs on board in the first innings, which seems a decent total against Warriorz's struggling unit.
