Just when things were going smooth for the Indian side in the run-chase, Mitch Santner decided to work his magic and take the crucial wicket of Shubman Gill to push India further on the back-foot in a crucial game.
After the early wicket of Rohit Sharma, New Zealand were on the front-foot before Yashasvi Jaiswal and Gill decided to take the attack to the opposition. The duo started a boundary barrage and the onslaught gave hope to the Indian fans. In no time India raced away to the 50-run mark as each run gave hopes to the Indian side as well.
With Jaiswal being the aggressor, Gill, soon joined the party, but just when he looked in complete control, Santner struck. He bowled a loopy delivery around middle and off as the delivery spun and took the outside-edge as Gill looks to defend it with hard hands. The ball travels quickly to first slip fielder who took a sharp catch.
Santner also scalps Jaiswal's wicket
Mitch Santner once again became India's nemesis as he persisted with accurate lines and lengths and took the crucial wicket of Jaiswal for 77. The partnership between Jaiswal and Virat Kohli was blossoming before Santner took the prized scalp.
Now, all hopes will lie on the shoulders of Virat Kohli. Interestingly, the former skipper has a stellar record in run-chases exceeding 300-plus runs. He averages nearly 65, and is a master of the chase as India will hope he can once again pull off something special to seal India's victory.
