Virat Kohli in action [Source: PTI]
Virat Kohli may have failed in the first innings and doesn't look in his old rhythm, but make no mistake, if anyone can help India level the series from here on, it has to be the former India captain. He has a stellar record in 300-plus chases and that gives his nation hope against a strong bowling attack.
With Rohit Sharma dismissed, India have 9 wickets left and all eyes will be on Kohli as the India great will look to avenge the poor dismissal he suffered in the first innings against Mitch Santner.
Interestingly, in the 300-plus run chases, Kohli has the third best average amongst all the batters who have played a minimum of 10 innings. The right-handed batter averages a staggering 64.6, including 3 fifties and 2 hundreds. The top two players om this list are Geoff Boycott and Sunil Gavaskar.
He scored a terrific century, Down Under Vs Australia in 2014, and that century still lives in the minds of the Indian fans, who will once again hope that Kohli can recreate the same innings Vs New Zealand in a 300-plus chase once again.
Kohli's Test form tells a different story
The champion batter regained his midas touch in 2023, when he scored a couple of Test tons and had a brilliant series against South Africa. However, since the turn of the year, he missed the England series due to the birth of his child, and when he returned to the longest format of the game, Kohli struggled for runs.
He failed against Bangladesh in the first Test, but scored a quick-fire 40's in the Kanpur Test. In the first Test Vs New Zealand, he was dismissed cheaply in the first innings, but he once again redeemed himself with a gritty 70.
In 5 Tests in 2024, Kohli has scored 228 runs, at an average of 28.50, including a solitary fifty.
