The inaugural match of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 saw Bangladesh Women face off against Scotland Women at the Dubai International Stadium on October 3. The match started with Bangladesh Women winning the toss and opting to bat first. Despite a solid effort, they could only set a modest target of 120 runs in their allotted 20 overs.

Bangladesh’s innings was largely a struggle, with none of their batters truly managing to take control of the game. Shobhana Mostary contributed the highest score for her team, making 36 runs, but even that wasn’t enough to push the total past 120. A brief cameo from Fatima Khatun, who scored 10 runs off just 5 balls, gave Bangladesh some hope, but they ultimately ended their innings at 119 for 7.

Saskia Horley Rattles Bangladesh's Batting Line-up

Scotland’s bowling attack performed well, with fast bowler Saskia Horley being the standout performer. She managed to take 3 wickets, causing regular disruptions in Bangladesh’s batting lineup. Additionally, Olivia Bell, Katherine Fraser, and Scotland’s captain Kathryn Bryce all picked up one wicket each to restrict Bangladesh’s scoring opportunities.

When it was Scotland’s turn to chase down the modest target of 120, they faced some early setbacks. The Scotland captain, Kathryn Bryce, came in to bat after opener Saskia Horley was dismissed early, having scored only 8 runs. Bryce looked promising but couldn’t stay long enough to anchor her team’s innings.

In the 6th over, Bryce was dismissed by Bangladesh’s Marufa Akter, who bowled a clever back-of-a-length delivery that nipped back just enough. The ball stayed low, catching Bryce by surprise as she was unable to get her bat down in time. The ball crashed into the middle stump, sending her back to the pavilion after scoring 11 runs off 11 balls, which included two well-struck boundaries. Bryce’s dismissal left Scotland struggling at 4 for 2 in 9 overs.

Scotland Struggle Against Bangladesh

At the time of writing, Scotland Women were at 4 for 2 after 9 overs. With a low target to chase but early wickets lost, it remains to be seen if Scotland can recover from their early losses and chase down the total successfully.
