Former Pakistan batting legend Younis Khan has voiced his support for Fakhar Zaman or Mohammad Rizwan to take over the captaincy of Pakistan's ODI and T20I teams. On Tuesday, Babar announced that he was stepping down from captaincy to focus more on his batting.

According to several reports, Babar Azam felt disconnected from the players and sensed that he was undervalued within the team.

Younis Khan Names Babar Azam's Replacement For Captaincy

Speaking at the iconic Adelaide Oval on Thursday, where Younis was honored with a special presentation, the former Pakistan captain expressed his belief that stepping away from leadership would benefit Babar's career.

"Stepping away from the captaincy will be beneficial for Babar Azam. In our culture, we often make the biggest player the captain, which I believe is a mistake. Either Mohammad Rizwan or Fakhar Zaman should be considered for the role," Younis told the reporters at Adelaide Oval

The discussion surrounding Babar Azam's replacement comes ahead of Pakistan's upcoming tour of Australia, scheduled for November.

Pakistan and Australia will face each other in three ODIs and three T20Is. Younis expressed hope that the Pakistan team would perform well on Australian soil but also highlighted concerns about the squad's composition and selection process.

“I have played cricket with Jason Gillespie; he is working hard to improve the Pakistan team. However, there needs to be better decision-making when it comes to selection," Younis added.

Pakistan's Recent Poor Form

Pakistan's recent form has raised concerns after a series defeat to Bangladesh, which has intensified the spotlight on the team ahead of their high-profile series against England in October.

With Babar Azam stepping down as captain and selection issues emerging, Pakistan cricket is at a crucial juncture as it prepares for major challenges in the months ahead. As Pakistan eyes its tour of Australia, the leadership question looms large.

The coming months will be critical for Pakistan as they urgently seek to bounce back from recent setbacks and re-establish themselves ahead of the Champions Trophy 2025
