In the 12th match of the Legends League Cricket 2024, former New Zealand star Martin Guptill delivered an unforgettable performance. Playing for Southern Super Stars, Guptill hammered an unbeaten 131 runs off just 54 balls against Konark Suryas Odisha. The target was set at 192, and Guptill’s masterclass innings helped his team chase it down in just 16 overs. His blistering knock included 11 sixes and 9 fours, with an impressive strike rate of 242.59.

The star batter opened the innings with captain Shreevats Goswami, who departed after scoring 18 runs. Later on, Guptill took the charge and unleashed an aggressive display of batting. His relentless attack left the opposition bowlers helpless, guiding Southern Super Stars to a memorable win.

Following the match, Guptill’s wife Laura McGoldrick posted a video of his stunning innings on social media. Along with the video, she tweeted, “You guys met my husband? 😂❤️‍🔥” – a clear jab at New Zealand Cricket for not giving Guptill enough opportunities before his international retirement. The tweet seemed to reflect her frustration with New Zealand’s decision to prioritize rising star Finn Allen over the seasoned opener.

Martin Guptill Announced Retirement From International Cricket

Martin Guptill had long been a key player for New Zealand in white-ball cricket, making significant contributions over the years. However, with the emergence of younger players like Finn Allen, Guptill found himself sidelined. Despite being in contention for a recall during the 2023 World Cup, Guptill was ultimately left out of the squad.

Even as late as November 2023, Guptill had not given up hope of a return to international cricket. Backed by former New Zealand cricketer Ian Smith, there were calls for his inclusion in the World Cup squad, but the highest run-scorer from the 2015 World Cup was overlooked and announced his retirement on November 26 from international cricket.
