In an unexpected twist during The Hundred 2023, Trent Rockets' mainstay, Joe Root, made headlines not with his batting but with his bowling.

Batting maestro Root switched gears and took over bowling duties

The game against Northern Superchargers saw him dismantle the middle-order, only for his team to fall heartbreakingly short in a nail-biting finish.

Regarding the match, much of the spotlight was grabbed by Luke Wood, who had stunned everyone by picking up three wickets in just his first six deliveries. However, as Wood's storm settled, Root displayed his spin bowling skills.

Adam Hose was Root's first victim, being dismissed for 18. On the 26th ball of the innings, Root delivered a deceptive googly at short length. Hose, trying to dispatch it to the boundary, misread and ended up offering a catch to Sam Hain at mid-wicket.

Root's magic with the ball continued. The 62nd ball saw him outfox Saif Zaib for 21. A tempting fullish delivery led Zaib to attempt a sweep, resulting in a soft dismissal, with Imad Wasim completing the catch at the short-fine leg.

Despite Root's double breakthrough, Superchargers had David Wiese to thank. His blistering innings of 54 from 25 deliveries filled with three boundaries and four sixes guided the team to 142/5 in their 100 balls.

The Rockets' chase got off to a rocky start with the early loss of Dawid Malan. Though Alex Hales and Colin Munro tried to steady the ship with their 47-run stand, their dismissals came in quick succession. Fresh from his bowling success, Root couldn't carry the momentum with the bat and was sent back for just four runs.

The game seemed to be slipping from the Rockets' grip, with Hain and Tom Kohler-Cadmore returning to the pavilion in quick succession. Yet, a glimmer of hope shined through Daniel Sams and skipper Lewis Gregory.

Their powerful strikes and a flurry of sixes brought the equation down to a tense finish. However, despite their courageous efforts, the Rockets could not cross the line and fell short by three runs.
