Women’s Test cricket has returned to India after a long and painful wait of nine years. Indian side led by Harmanpreet Kaur was scheduled to host the England Women’s team for the lone test of the bilateral series.

The last Women’s Test ever played on Indian soil dates back to November 2014, and it took India nearly a decade to host a red ball game. Nonetheless, it's better late than never.

Day 1 of the lone Test commenced today at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai. Kaur won the toss and surprisingly elected to bat first on a pitch with significant patches of green grass.

Subsequently, the Indian side paid the price as they lost two wickets in quick succession. While Smriti Mandhana got dismissed in the sixth over, Shefali Verma was bowled by Kate Cross in the ninth over.

Next up in line were debutantes Shubha Satheesh and Jemimah Rodrigues. The duo came in at a crucial juncture yet displayed tremendous grit to stabilize the Indian innings.

Jemimah slams fifty on her Test debut

Jemimah, in particular, looked rock solid. She deviated from her natural and fierce approach to play a proper test match knock. Not once did Rodriguez attempt a rash shot as she understood the gravity of the situation.

Needless to say, the debutant reaped the rewards of her patience as she slammed a half-century on her test debut.

While Jemimah Rodriguez kept her emotions in check, her teammates back in the dugout stood up in applause. Her family in the stands seemed vividly ecstatic. Undoubtedly, it was a moment to cherish for the Rodriguez family.

Having said that, Jemimah lost her wicket to Lauren Bell in the 40th over. Nonetheless, her magnificent knock of 68 runs off 99 deliveries set the tone for the lower order to finish things up and set up a fighting first innings total.
