Australian veteran Steve Smith failed to capitalize on his fluent start as he was cheaply dismissed by Pakistan debutant Khurram Shahzad in the final session of the opening day.

Taking field against the visitors in the first Test of their three-match series at the Perth Stadium, the 34-year-old belted four elegant boundaries in his 60-ball stay at the crease, and formed a blistering 79-run partnership with centurion David Warner for the third wicket after the early departure of Marnus Labuschagne.

Steve Smith hands Shahzad his first Test wicket

Steve Smith nicked one behind off the bowling of Khurram Shahzad to hand Pakistan’s Test debutant his first international wicket.

Senior ‘Men in Green’ wicketkeeper Sarfaraz Ahmed pouched a sprawling catch to his right after Smith’s tentativeness had induced a fine outside edge in the final session of the opening day.

Steve Smith scored 31 runs in the innings and his dismissal concluded his 79-run partnership with David Warner.

Warner himself notched up an explosive century, the 26th of his career, during the second session of the day. The elegant left-hander, set to retire from Tests following the conclusion of the series, shared 126 runs for the opening wicket with partner Usman Khawaja at the top of the order, thus negating Shaheen Afridi’s new-ball threat.

Smith’s dismissal made way for in-form batter Travis Head into the crease, as he and Warner took up the subsequent run-scoring onus against Pakistan to pile on Australia’s early momentum.
