In a scintillating display of seam bowling, Mumbai Indians women’s pacer Shabnim Ismail rocked Gujarat Giants with two early wickets in the powerplay, with the latest victim being experienced Harleen Deol.

Defending champions Mumbai Indian women’s team clashed with Gujarat Giants women in the third fixture of the ongoing WPL 2024 season. Harmanpreet Kaur won the toss for the second time in a row and opted to bowl first at the M.Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru.

Meanwhile, Shabnim Ismail, MI’s frontline pacer, struck early to rate the Giants’ top order. She first removed Veda Krishnamurthy with a fullish delivery that angled in.

Ismail was smart enough to catch the movement off the surface and trap the next batter in Harleen Deol similarly. Ismail bowled a good length delivery this time, and the ball seamed in sharply after pitching onto the off-stump line. Deol tried to shuffle but was beaten by the pace and was trapped on the pads.

The umpire raised her finger, but Harleen Deol opted for DRS review after having a brief chat with her captain on the other end. After the ultra edge showed a flat line, the ball tracking also displayed three reds to end Deol’s stay at the crease.

She not only lost her crucial wicket but also burned the Giants’ review along the way.  With that, Gujarat Giants lost two quick wickets inside the powerplay, thus putting early pressure on themselves.

On the flip side, Shabnim Ismail continued to dominate the league with sublime form. She raked the Delhi Capitals lineup in the season opener, and now, by taking two crucial wickets against the Giants, Ismail has become MI’s trump card this WPL 2024 season.

It would be interesting to see how Gujarat Giants recovered from these early setbacks, whereas Mumbai Indians continue to remain on top.
