The second season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL 2024) kickstarted with a bang with a thriller match. The tournament commenced where it left off in the finals of WPL season one between Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on 23rd February, Friday.

The game began with Mumbai Indians winning the toss and choosing to bowl first, Harmanpreet Kaur and Co. restricted the power-hitting middle order of Delhi Capitals at a score of 171. Alice Capsey and Jemimiah Rodrigues scored 75 and 42 runs respectively. Despite losing quick wickets Mumbai Indians managed to win the first match of WPL season two by 4 wickets.

Delhi Capitals registered the highest total ever recorded against Mumbai Indians in the history of WPL, in the first match of the second season. The DC women put 171 runs on the board, for Mumbai to chase.

Previously the record was held by UP Warriors who scored 159 runs against Mumbai Indians at the loss of six wickets at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai in WPL 2023.


4. First half-century by a left-hander in WPL

The Mumbai Indians top order batter Yastika Bhatia became the first left-hander to score a half-century in the history of WPL. It is quite surprising that no left-hand batter managed to register a 50+ score in WPL 2023.

The opening batter Yastika Bhatia scored 57 runs off 45 deliveries with a strike rate of 126.67 as she smashed eight boundaries and two maximum hits.


3. All 4 Overseas Players from different countries in a team

Along with the victory in the first match of WPL 2024, the defending champions Mumbai Indians registered a unique record as the team became the first franchise to play 4 overseas players in the game belonging to all four different countries.

The team’s Playing XI against DC included Hayley Matthews from West Indies, Amelia Kerr from New Zealand, Nat Sciver-Brunt from England, and Shabnim Ismail from South Africa.

Star English batter Alice Capsey once again shined bright for the Delhi Capitals team as she led the team towards a high total in the first match. She brutally thrashed the Mumbai Indians bowling unit with nine fours and three magnificent sixes.

She put 75 runs on the board off 53 deliveries with a strike rate of 141.51 before she was LBWed by the Kiwi bowler Amelia Kerr. She also took 2 wickets in her spell of 2 overs in the game, while taking the captain Harmanpreet Kaur’s wicket.

Sajeevan Sanjana became the talk of the town after her heroics in the first match of the WPL season two. The batting all-rounder walked to the crease at number eight for Mumbai Indians as she played the last ball of the game with 5 runs to chase.

With only an option to score a boundary on the last ball, she did the unexpected. Sanjana smashed the ball for a huge six leading Mumbai Indians to win the game and Delhi Capitals bowler Alice Capsey was in shock. Sanjana became the only woman in the history of cricket to score a six on the first ball she played on the final ball of a T20 chase.
