Afghanistan all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai blazed through Sri Lankan bowlers for his maiden ODI century during the series opener in Kandy. Chasing 382 to secure an improbable win after slipping to 55-5, Omarzai shared a record-shattering partnership with senior teammate Mohammad Nabi to make a match out of a seemingly one-sided affair.

The 24-year-old ended up whacking 149 unbeaten runs in all, keeping Afghanistan's defeat margin down to just 42 runs in the high-scoring thriller.


Azmatullah rehearses for IPL 2024 with cracking ton

After Sri Lanka charted 381 upfront, Afghanistan lost three early wickets to slip to 19-3 in 5.2 overs, thus paving an early way into the crease for number five Azmatullah Omarzai. The visitors also lost Rahmat Shah and Gulbadin Naib a while later as their troubles worsened at 55-5.

Chasing an uphill task and forming forces with senior man Mohammad Nabi, Azmatullah employed a carefree approach as the two waged a remarkable fightback for Afghanistan. Both cricketers tallied identical triple-figure knocks in their record-shattering 242-run partnership to take their side near the 300-run mark in the 46th over.

Azmatullah Omarzai raced to his own hundred from just 89 balls with a six off Janith Liyanage. The innings marked his maiden ODI century, and he converted it into a big one by finishing at an unbeaten 149 off 115 balls.

For his splendid run with the bat in limited-overs internationals for Afghanistan, Azmatullah Omarzai was acquired by the Gujarat Titans franchise for the upcoming IPL 2024 season back in December 2023 at the auction.

The IPL 2024 season, set to commence sometime in late March, will mark Omarzai's tournament debut.
