Shreyas Iyer Left Out of India's Test Squad Vs ENG Due to Poor Form, Not Injury: Reports

Shreyas Iyer has been dropped from the Indian Test team for the remaining three matches in the ongoing five-Test series against England. The announcement, made on Saturday morning, has put a spotlight on Iyer's struggles with form and fitness.

Shreyas Iyer's form slump results in omission from India's squad vs England

Despite being a part of the starting XI for the first two Tests, Iyer's performance has not met the expectations, leading to his exclusion from the squad. While BCCI indicated that Shreyas Iyer is dealing with a stiff back, a report from Sports Tak has made it clear that his exclusion is primarily attributed to his lack of form.

Iyer, who stepped into the crucial number 4 position in the absence of Virat Kohli—out of the series due to personal reasons—could not capitalize on the opportunity. With scores of 27 and 29 in the two innings of the second Test in Vizag, where India secured a victory to level the series, his contribution has been under scrutiny.

His recent outings have seen him without a Test half-century in his last 11 innings, a dry spell that has raised concerns over his place in the team.

The injury not only sidelines him from the remainder of the Test series but also rules him out of the domestic Ranji Trophy, dealing a blow to his immediate playing prospects. Throughout the series against England, Iyer has managed to score 104 runs over four innings, a figure that pales in comparison to the expectations set by his career average of 36.86 from 14 Test matches, including five fifties and a century.

Meanwhile, the Indian squad for the last three Tests sees the return of star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul, both recovering from injuries sustained in the first Test. Their inclusion, however, is contingent upon passing fitness assessments by the BCCI.

As the series moves forward with England looking to secure a historic series win in India—a feat last achieved by Alastair Cook's team in 2012/13—the third Test is set to commence at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot on February 15, followed by matches in Ranchi and Dharamsala.
