Sydney Thunder opener David Warner, for the second time in succession, failed to make an impact with the bat on his BBL return as he was dismissed for just 13 against Adelaide Strikers.

Turning up for his side at Canberra’s Manuka Oval in match number 37 of the ongoing BBL 2023-24 season, Warner stepped out to Jamie Overton in the fourth over of the innings, only to end up slicing his drive towards D’Arcy Short at deep point.

Warner departs for 13, Thunder in early trouble

Dashing Australian opening batsman David Warner belted confident boundaries off Henry Thornton and Jamie Overton to race to 13* off eight before he was deceived by the latter of the two speedsters in the penultimate ball of the fourth over.

Using his feet to thwack Overton onto his offside, Warner merely managed to slice his crushing drive towards Adelaide Strikers’ D’Arcy Short at the deep point region.

A few overs after David Warner’s dismissal, number three Cameron Bancroft and middle-order star Oliver Davies also fell in quick succession as Sydney Thunder slumped to 75-3 at the halfway stage of their innings.

Warner made his comeback to Sydney Thunder’s BBL setup earlier in the week during their Sydney-derby clash against Sydney Sixers at the SCG. The cricketer scored a sluggish 37 in the game and subsequently failed to take his side past the finishing line.

Earlier in January, the legendary opener confirmed his retirement from Tests and ODIs for Australia. The 37-year-old will soon be reuniting with his IPL franchise Delhi Capitals for the 2024 season after the conclusion of the 2023-24 BBL.
